Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits to having my stump removed?

Having your stump removed, provides you with a more beautiful, aesthetically pleasing landscape. It makes mowing much easier as well, and it can also save on lawnmower repair bills. If stumps are left sitting, they will become a home and breeding ground for carpenter ants and termites – both of which can cause significant damage to your house or any other wood structure, which in turn, can incur expensive home repairs and insect mitigation down the road.

How deep can you grind my stump?

Our normal stump grinding depth is 6-8″ below grade. This depth provides plenty of space to back-fill the area with top soil, and successfully plant grass, or lay sod. We are also able to grind much deeper if you choose to replant a tree in the same area.

What should I do with all of the leftover wood chips and soil?

The answer is largely based on personal preference, as well as your budget. We find that most of our customers prefer to keep the wood chips to use for themselves, rather than paying us to haul them away – which costs considerably more, since it requires additional equipment, travel time, and disposal fees.

If I decide to have the leftover wood chips hauled away, can you backfill the remaining hole with soil and plant grass?

Absolutely! We offer backfilling with top soil, and sowing grass seed combined with a slow-release fertilizer…at an additional cost.

Do the leftover wood chips have any value? Can I use them in my garden or around my existing trees?

The wood chips do indeed hold value. They are the best long-term fertilizer for trees, and have the added benefit of feeding the beneficial organisms and fungi in the soil. Mulch also creates beautiful top soil, and can help restore and revitalize the soil profile and soil food web over time. Mulch also helps improve moisture content in the soil, and prevents water from evaporating as quickly in hot/dry conditions. In most scenarios, stump grindings can be used immediately around trees, providing the enormous benefits as mentioned above.

Mulch also provides the same benefits for newly planted trees, as well as in your garden area, but in this case, I recommend that you age the stump grindings for at least 1 year prior to use. The initial decomposition of wood chips uses up nitrogen from the top 1″ of existing soil, which can stunt the growth of shallow rooted plants and young trees and shrubs. Over time, the stump grindings add plenty of healthy nitrogen back into the soil.

How much will it cost to have my stump removed?

Good question. There are many variables that go into removing a tree stump, including size, hardwood vs. softwood, above-ground roots, as well as rocks, bricks and other debris in the surrounding soil or impregnated in the stump itself. Instead of charging by the inch, we give firm bids that are based on the variables above. We find this method to work out better for both parties.

Do you give free bids?

Yes, we give free in-person bids. Also, If you are able to text, email, or Facebook message me a picture of the stump in conjunction with some other relatable object (ideally a ruler, yardstick, or tape measure), I will be able to at least give you a price range and possibly a firm bid…before we meet in person.

How do you make sure that there aren’t any underground utility lines near my stump before you grind?

Before removing your tree stump, we will call Iowa One/811 at least 48 hours prior to grinding, to make sure there are no underground utility lines running underneath, or close to your stump. If you are aware of any private lines or irrigation close to the stump, we would appreciate your knowledge before we start working.
